Where are you from: Connecticut, USA
A little bit about you: Currently, I'm working for a university here in Connecticut. I've been there for almost two and a half years. I just celebrated my three year anniversary with my partner, who is non-binary (he/she/they). I'm cis (she/her) and bi/pan. I'm living in an apartment with my sister. I have no children by choice. I'm really interested in politics, though it's been more difficult to keep up because my mental health has been pretty bad lately. I'm taking a break from twitter and I've been avoiding the more political podcasts I listen to. Basically, I just wanted to give a warning that I'm liberal, feminist, angry, and I'll probably talk about those things from time to time.
What are your interests?: I'm interested in gender and queer issues, politics in general, social justice, etc. I enjoy listening to podcasts and reading books. I play some video games (single player RPGs mostly) and watch some television. I used to write a lot, and I'm working on getting back to it.
Any hobbies?: My hobbies revolve around my computer. Here on LJ I like making icons and modding some communities. I screencap tv and movies for a website call KissThemGoodbye, which is partnered with
Favorite fandoms?: Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Killing Eve, Fincher movies, some specific Marvel/DC stuff, Mad Men, a lot of period drama/fantasy stuff and some horror, Star Wars, Dexter, The Witcher, Stranger Things, The X-Files, and a lot I'm probably forgetting. Favorite video games include Dragon Age, the Witcher, Skyrim, Tomb Raider, and Horizon Zero Dawn.
Dislikes?: Ignorance, willful ignorance.
What do you look for in a friend? Do you have a policy?: I'd prefer friends 25+ and I can't relate to moms if that's all you post about. I'd like friends who care about issues, even have specific issues that drive them, but in general just have their minds open to the world around them.
What are your posts mostly about? They've been about my daily life. I bullet point my posts, so every post can have totally random things going on in them.
How often do you post? How often do you check your friends list?: I could update every day for a few days and then go away for four or five days. I try to check my friends list at least twice a week, but it's probably more.

A little bit about you: She/Her. Don't talk about politics too often here because Facebook ranting makes me miserable enough, but pretty liberal. I've been in fannish circles since high school under the same two usernames, more or less.
What are your interests?: Writing, reading, history, old newspapers, miscellaneous social causes.

Favorite fandoms?: Currently very involved in Schitt's Creek fandom. Also known to tinker in Harry Potter and Buffy, and I love Parks and Rec to fannish levels and would probably be in that fandom if there were one. Same with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
Necessary disclaimer: I love Harry Potter, but don't take this to mean I in any way endorse JK Rowling. All of my Harry Potter books were bought decades ago, and I do not plan on financially contributing to any projects or merchandise coming from her. More the reason to love SC fandom. Dan Levy is a gem of a human being.

I'm not here only for fannish reasons anymore, but I do prefer posts that are conversational and interactive, rather than day-to-day posts.
What are your posts mostly about? Well, largely what I said above, though not as much fannishness as I used to. I talk about why people do the things they do, observations about books/movies/shows, occasionally politics.

- Answering questions found on Reddit and Quora, including a mom who wanted her sixteen year old to take her twelve year old to a high school dance with her (the 16 yo) friends.
How often do you post? How often do you check your friends list?: I only update once or twice a week these days because no one's really around, but I check at least once a day.
ETA: One more thing! My LJ is flocked big time, so don't take the apparent lapse in updates to mean anything. My public entries are few and far in between, but do give a general idea of the kinds of things I post.

Still doesn't make me feel comfortable returning to the U.S. or the academic environment.

Well, we are already friends and hope to remain so for a long time but I feel we never talked about this, perhaps because I don't really count as a great HP fan being Gen X and all. So I only read the books and watched the movies a few years ago, got them from the library. I don't share this nostalgia but always felt I needed to hold back with criticism because people were so into it. That being said – now I feel I am not allowed to express anymore that I am actually excited about the new Fantastic Beast movie. Of course I do not endorse JKR and her transphobic view points. Yet, I cannot deny that I am invested in this story, even though there are some problems with it itself but I for some reason cannot deny that I enjoy it a lot more than the HP series. Yet I feel like I am not even allowed to voice that in my own journal anymore.

Date: 2021-11-15 12:36 pm (UTC)The ironic thing is that I felt ALL I ever saw was criticism of the books, and felt I wasn't allowed to like them. I'm not saying you're wrong, I think it depends on where you go. I was really excited about the anniversary of the DH release, realized no one else cared, and I felt a lot of it was the general "canon is ew" vibe I felt around fandom. But there are also a lot of fans who don't want to hear any criticism, and that gets frustrating.
And of course now, being a fan is harder. I still like the series, yet I feel I have to mention how much I hate JK Rowling every time I talk about them. i really do want to separate myself from her views, and some of the problematic aspects of her books (which I've long acknowledged).
And FWIW, there's nothing wrong with being invested in FB. I didn't really like the last movie, but know a lot of people who loved it. We can't all agree on everything.
ETA: Speaking of talking about things in your own journal, I almost feel like enthusiasm about anything needs to be muted these days. I don't know. It makes me sad and is a large part of why I don't post as often.

Date: 2021-11-15 02:35 pm (UTC)I get that in way but on the other hand it's like – do we really have to put this disclaimer in front of it every time? I don't know. Maybe. I get that you and I and I guess everyone with compassion wants to seperate themselves from her social media misinformation and whatever hatred she is spreading. I think when you say "separate yourself from the problematic aspects of her books" or in extension the FB movies … though they are not so prominent there yet – I'm not sure I agree. I think this is something we need to acknowledge and need be kept aware of, so that when we consume other media, we will be able to identify and expose it. I mean for me as an adult reader and perhaps also because of my heritage, a lot of these things were a lot more clear to me on the first read though then I read some interviews with her where she overexplained things (like the HIV and werewolf thing) that I didn't really understand from the text itself as such ... it's just a lot what is wrong there. So I don't think you should embrace this as good ideas but cutting them out of canon/changing them and separating yourself them is also not a good idea in my personal opinion. It's there, and we need to acknowledge these things as part of a flawed canon.

My limited experience with this fandom was that it was all about canon unless it was about male slash and SSHG. Both of which is not my cup of tea. But okay if it's yours. But I have to say canon itself is, apart from the bits that I felt were really problematic, fine/whatever by me... I just have this problem with with the Epilogue and JKR wanting to dictate through Pottermore how anything in this world is regulated in detail so that it is really stifling for anyone who is imaging anything else. Like when she wrote that Cho married some Muggle. It's oppressive and I don't consider it canon though apparently her fans do? Why do this? Why not let people come up with their own ideas like oh idek Cho eventually gets engaged to Oliver Wood and they are the power couple of the Quidditch World. I also do not understand how JKR can say that The Cursed Child is canon when it openly contradicts her novels in parts.
To me there are a lot of problems in canon but they are so deeply ingrained that they cannot be fixed. On the other hand, there is no denying that JKR is not a bad writer and has brought together a lot of materials from different sources to craft a semi-orginal but interesting story with HP. For me it was always Jill Murphy's The Worst Witch meets WWII to a degree with some other Enid Blyton-esque adventures thrown in and other little bits and bobs here and there. Maybe why I find FB more compelling because there is more going on with more adult and female characters.
I didn't really like the last movie, but know a lot of people who loved it.
The extended cut was a bit better because there was more more show and less tell. But I agree that the regular version suffered terribly from an enormous amount of lengthy exposition. I particularly hated JKR killing off Leta for the sake of bring Newt and Theseus closer together in their manpain. As uncomfortable the whole Nagini controversy made me to an extent I have to say that Claudia Kim and Nagini were easily the best part of the whole movie, one of the reasons why I'm incredibly excited for this and need this series to continue and end properly.
I almost feel like enthusiasm about anything needs to be muted these days.
I feel like we are not really living in a super enthusiastic world. And you want to be careful who you are sharing this enthusiasm with lest it gets dampened immediately or you are told you are wrong to feel that way.

I didn't realise it until now but you're so right.Everything is so extreme.You have people who hate on things and fans who can't take criticism and I'm just here like...I just like things I like.
Overall,the HP fandom isn't as active here as it used to be,or maybe I kind of fell out of touch with it.

Date: 2021-12-04 08:00 pm (UTC)I liked the second movie well enough and I actually thought that when you watch the extended cut with some of the deleted scenes left in, it improves greatly. On the whole though, it bothered me that there was so much exposition when there really shouldn't have been, e.g. when Leta explains to Yusuf why Credence isn't her other half-brother. It's this long flashback of explanation in that crypt while really everyone should have other things on their minds like oh say go and see what Grindelwald and his followers are up to. It just struck me as bad pacing. I appreciate a lot of the details and still love to watch it all. Like I said before, I was really unhappy with JKR killing off Leta. It felt like it was done to bring Newt and Theseus closer together. I mean it's generally a complaint of mine that JKR doesn't treat women well in her stories. Maybe with Hermione and Tina as the exceptions.
But yes all that being said, I am really excited for the third movie and honestly get upset every time somebody yells "cancel it already". Be that because of JKR or because of Johnny Depp. I mean the latter is no longer involved and yes, I'm not denying the former is absolutely problematic but I still want to see this story end properly and I want Claudia Kim back as Nagini – I wager she won't be in The Secrets of Dumbledore because of her pregnancy and Covid restrictions. So I'd be mighty cross if they just try to slap an ending on the series.

Yeah, I feel the same way. The whole hating on things is really stressful. I mean there are things I do not care for but to me that means okay – that's fine if you like that but it doesn't mean that I have to right so we're cool, and I except that when vice versa I like something and you do not care for it, that's also just fine. I mean as long as it's not ethically reprehensible or breaking the law.
I'll say I have no idea how active the HP fandom was or wasn't? I don't think I ever really was part of a fandom... well maybe Alias for hot minute many years ago. In a way, that has always made me a bit say ... I mean for anything, because I like to talk about things but then I'm also always worried that I'm too wordy and boring for people.

Date: 2021-12-05 09:06 am (UTC)I really love Queenie and I'm...sad?A bit worried about where her story is going to go eventually,she's my favourite of the characters! I liked the inclusion of Nagini. I had the world's biggest crush on Percival Graves(Colin Farrell's face,lol) and I'd absolutely love to see him in his gorgeousness and fashionable outfits if possible, come on JKR,you can cook something up!XD
HP fandom was very active,especially in the fanfic part of it.I used to be involved in writing a lot back then,sometimes also adding fanarts.But I kind of fell out of it since 2018, then a lot of the comms also shifted away from LJ to operate on Dreamwidth(where I am more active now but for icon making mainly) and I think a lot of new fans came in,so the vibe of the fandom was just...different.
For a while now I've been more into C-Dramas like The Untamed, Guardian, K dramas, Kpop, all the older animes that I used to watch(I'm rewatching some of those) and nowadays I find myself watching things on the nicer or cuter side.
One of my comfort series is BBC Musketeers, gosh,how I love that show! Merlin too,but only the first 3 seasons. But oh, I keep up with mainstream shows sometimes, like 'You'.
What about you? I'm also gonna check out your profile to see if I can find hints,haha!
Edit: I checked out your page but it's empty! But oh I see your userpic is a DW picture! \o/ I watched till season 6 or 7,I can't remember, but it was the one with Matt Smith and he 'dies', there's the Silence and all those storylines! SO GOOD! I have yet to finish his story and move on to Capaldi's one.

Date: 2021-12-05 01:57 pm (UTC)I'm sorry that the movies do not seem to gain the interest of most HP fans (but strangely The Cursed Child does) and that was even before all of JKR's twitter rants. Maybe it's the period aspect of it, the whole new set of characters aspect... but for me it's like, there are still so many bits in there that I absolutely adore and that excite me like: "Dumbledore knew Nagini when she was a person and they met at Hogwarts, can you imagine!!!"
Ah, I see. I don't know – I have a few HP fans on my f-list here and one person I used to write fic for (which I'm not quite sure I enjoy anymore but that's okay, I still leave it on AO3 because others might). I never got into Dreamwidth. I made an account when everyone did way back then and used it to back-up LJ a few times but I just couldn't get into posting there.
I heard of The Untamed and a friend suggested Mr Fox and Miss Rose to me... I may misremember the title but I haven't got around to it. I started one C-Drama but again didn't get very far it was about a famous Go player who saw everything in black and white after an accident in his childhood and a young woman who wanted to become a reporter at the TV station where her sister was the news anchor but things didn't go so well for her until the famous Go player asked her to interview him (something about that he can see colour again when he his around her). But I didn't get very far. It was cute though. I've watched a few K-Dramas my absolute favourite was Misty but I also loved Crash Landing Into You, Touch My Heart and What's Wrong With Secretary Kim. So yes, I totally understand what you mean by looking for cuter and nicer things.
Yes, I did watch BBC Musketeers but I couldn't really with the ending – with age I am more into the gen side of things but here I was still like... we were doing so well with Athos and Milady. And frankly they were both not terribly good people so they were perfect for each other. And finally it felt like we were at a point where they could reconcile or had even at some point but then he gets Sylvie, who is way too good and lovely for him and gets a fresh start while Milady is forced to be an assassin forever. The misogyny... the whole Madonna/whore thinking of it all... made me so mad.

Date: 2021-12-05 01:57 pm (UTC)Oh, I thought most of my interests were on my profile page – on my main page like yeah my banner and main icon are from Upstairs Downstairs (2010) – Hallam/Persephone played by Ed Stoppard and Claire Foy aka the scandalous ship of the show. I do like period drama – Manhattan, The Americans, Downton Abbey, Babylon Berlin, Das Adlon – also Reign (I used to have a tumblr where I posted all my Reign fanart), Dickinson, The Great, Britannia, Barbarians. Other favourite shows include Alias, The Magicians, The Outpost, 12 Monkeys... — and yes Doctor Who. I never did any Doctor/Companion shipping until Twelve (Capaldi) and Clara but there were just too adorable. Matt Smith era: Season 7 halfway through is when Amy/Rory leave and they switch with Clara.

Date: 2021-12-06 07:08 pm (UTC)Yeah – Reign was odd in the sense that it could be surprisingly and out of the blue historically accurate when nobody expected it to be and then it was suddenly complete fantasy. It taught me to take things in stride. I am sorry that Kenna's story went so off the rails. There is some regret there for sure but overall a lot to love. I had to delete my tumblr sadly because of when I wanted to extend my U.S. visa they suddenly asked me to disclose my social media and I was like no, not going to happen (LJ was not on the list of platforms they asked for)... even if it's just bloody Reign and Borgia fanart, this is none of anybody's business. So I deleted the whole thing.
Yeah with Twelve/Clara it came as a surprise but it was hard to unsee it once you release the chemistry. What was your favourite part of Doctor Who so far?
